Dr. D’Harlingue – Crystal History Teacher

Day in the Life:

Dr. D’Harlingue gets up in the morning between 5-5:30 and leaves the house within 30-40 minutes to beat traffic. Since he lives in the East Bay, on normal days, it takes him between 30-40 minutes to get to Crystal. But on bad traffic days, it takes him 60-70 minutes. While in the car, he chooses to listen to Spotify, history podcasts, or the news.

When he gets to work, he drinks coffee, checks his email, takes in the news, and looks up information for his own research: taking a couple of minutes to himself. On Mondays, he teaches four classes, and for the rest of the week, he teaches two.

When he is not teaching, he is grading, preparing lessons, building out the bigger curriculum, and collaborating with colleagues. Normally, when he has a break, he will go on walks with other PAC members and eat snacks to keep himself energized. During lunch time, he meets with students, dines with the PAC, or relaxes at his desk. Additionally, he takes meetings with students/colleagues at various times during the day, depending on availability and meeting schedules.

He will stay at Crystal from 3:30-6:30, depending on the night, as it can take him anywhere from 50 minutes to even 90 minutes to get home. At home, he answers emails, grades assignments, and reads books/articles about history, social sciences, and humanities. If he has time, he will watch a TV show in the evening, and he normally goes to bed before 10 o’clock each night.

Other than working 50 hours a week, he enjoys eating, sleeping, taking care of his dogs, seeing his partner, doing chores, taking tennis and swim classes. Also, he can often be found doing housework, engaging with the humans he lives with, prepping for school, taking a class, or even seeing friends on the weekends!

Crystal Student: Louise Kim

Sophomore (Class of 2028)

A Typical Monday:

She wakes up at 6 am and makes coffee, and does some last minute studying and homework from 6:10-7:15. From 7:15-7:20, she packs her bags for school and journals if she has time. She gets ready for school and leaves her house at 7:45. Since she lives in Los Altos, she drives to the Woodside bus station while she finishes getting ready in the car and eats breakfast. She then gets on the bus and reads, studies, or watches her phone. She arrives at school at 8:34, taking her about 50 minutes to get to school each morning.

At school, she says hi to her friends and then at 8:40 on the dot, she heads to her first class, which is History. Then, after History, she goes to Math. Next, for Office Hours at 10:20, she goes to the cafe and gets either a bagel or an apple, and then goes to English class. After English, she has lunch and hangs out with her friends from 11:15-12. At noon, she then has computer science, then Chemistry, Acting, and French. Also, between classes, she will grab a snack such as cheese or an apple.

At 3:23, she gets on the bus, and it usually takes her an hour to get home. She normally naps and catches up on sleep during this duration of time. She gets home at 4:30, changes into archery clothes, and then takes a short break, often using this time to choose her outfit for the next day. From 5 to 6:15 pm, she does homework and eats dinner. Then from 6:40-8, she has archery practice. When she gets back from archery, she does homework, studies, showers, and gets ready for bed. Furthermore,  she never misses her mindful meditation before going to bed at 1 am. She, on average, gets about 5-6.5 hours of sleep each night.

This has been a typical Monday through the lens of both a teacher and a student. It is so interesting to see how unique every individual is, despite all spending most days in the same place.
