At Crystal Springs Uplands School, fostering a sense of community and social responsibility is ingrained in our ethos. Recently, we organized a hands-on initiative called the Life Moves Lunch Bag Assembly, which saw the participation of thirty students under the guidance of Ms. Schorn. This project unfolded during office hours and lunch periods in the school hall outside of the US Office. Equipped with folding tables, plastic knives, gloves, and plates, students gathered to take part in this meaningful project. The assembly line method was employed to ensure efficiency in the process, with each student assigned various tasks such as slicing bread, making the peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, and preparing fruits and vegetables. The goal was to assemble lunch bags filled with essential food items for those in need within our community. As students worked diligently, their efforts translated into tangible acts of kindness, with each lunch bag representing a nourishing meal for someone facing food insecurity. Beyond the practical aspect of assembling lunches, this project provided students with a unique opportunity to engage directly with the issue of food insecurity. It encouraged them to reflect on the realities faced by individuals in their community and instilled in them a sense of empathy and social responsibility. Under the guidance of Ms. Schorn and VP of Community Engagement Rohan D. ‘25, students collaborated to produce 128 lunches! Their collective effort served as a powerful reminder of the impact that small gestures can have in creating meaningful change. The Life Moves Lunch Assembly left a lasting impression on all participants, reinforcing the importance of compassion and collective action. It exemplified our school’s commitment to community engagement. In conclusion, the Life Moves Lunch Assembly at Crystal Upper School was not just about assembling lunches; it was about fostering a culture of empathy, kindness, and social responsibility.
